A result type determines which search result displays Information Portal uses for each type of search (or index). (For example, you may want to assign special summary and full bib displays for Information Portal to display when users perform a general keyword search.) If you want to use any of the displays that you have created, you must add them to a result type. (For more information on creating a display, see Customizing a Search Result Display.)
A result type is a way for Information Portal to tie together an index (or search) and the search result displays that you want Information Portal to display when users search using that index. (For more information on indexes, see Changing the Indexes for Your Library.)
Here is an example of a result type with its assigned displays:
Information Portal delivers default result types and assigns them to the indexes imported when you first install Information Portal. You can add new result types to assign different search result displays to an index, or change an existing one.
The result types and index pairings in Customize must match any changes that you make in Setup. (For example, if you go into three different profiles in Setup and assign a different result type to the same index in each one, you must make sure that you have those three result types assigned to that same index name in Customize for Information Portal to return results correctly.)
(For instructions on changing the pairing in Setup, see Changing an Index’s Result Type.)
When you add a result type for non-browse indexes, you must be sure that it has at least a summary and full search result display assigned (for example, a Keyword Summary display and Full Bib display for the author keyword search index, or an Events Summary display and an Events full display for the events keyword search index).
If you want to, you can change a result type or delete a result type that you no longer need.
