Conditions for Setting Up MARC Tags

Once you create the 938 and 950 media tags and subfields for your media-related bibliographic records, the information you enter in those tags appears on the bibliographic detail window for the items. Consequently, when borrowers do keyword searches on the terms you enter in the 938 and 950 tags, all of the related media items appear on the search results because you cannot create a conditional MARC map on a 245 (title) tag.

If you do not want borrowers to see this information, use this table to set up your MARC tags to prevent the media items from displaying in borrower searches:

Note

Create a combined search option.

This affects the display of bibliographic records in both staff and public access search indexes. For instructions, see the System Administration Guide.

All media items use call numbers. If a borrower searches by call number, all media items appear on the search result.

Create a new location for media items only.

For instructions, see Setting Up Location Parameters.

You need to decide if creating a new location for media items is something you want to do at your library.

Attach a note to the bib record that indicates the item is a Media Scheduling-only item.

For more information, see the Cataloging Guide.

The media items appear in the search results, but they are grayed out.
