A Z39.50 lookup code is for coded elements on an item display that are not easily readable by most library users. These are usually a boolean (or true/false) value for certain elements, or coded text strings. (For example, there are boolean values for whether an item is available or not, whether an item is renewable or not, or whether an item is on hold or not. There are text string values for item type codes.) You may want to display words that would make sense to your users for these values on an item display. (For example, you may want to display “Checked In” if an item is available or “Checked Out” if the item is not available.)
Information Portal is delivered with Z39.50 lookup code values already defined for your Z39.50 and OPAC item displays. However, you may want to add or change a Z39.50 lookup code value. (For example, if you are using languages other than English, you may want to change these values to another language, or add new values for more languages.) You can also delete a Z39.50 lookup code value that you no longer need.
Some information you need complies with the standard for the Z39.50 protocol, maintained by the Library of Congress. If you want more information on this standard, see the Library of Congress web site at http://www.loc.gov/z3950/agency.
