Adding an External Link to a Commercial Web Site

You can add an external link to any commercial web site. Commercial links that that might be useful to a user include links to online bookstores or other resources. By default, Information Portal includes commercial links to Amazon and Barnes & Noble online bookstores for each Information Portal Library.

By default, all commercial links are displayed under the “Search Bookstores” heading on the full bib page. If you want to add a commercial link to a web site that is not a bookstore, you can change the “Search Bookstores” heading to match your specific needs. (For instructions, see Changing the Label of a Link Heading.)

To add an external link to a commercial web site

1 Open your Information Portal Administration tool web site.
2 Click the Setup tab.
3 Click the Libraries sub-tab.
4 Click the External Links option.

The Administration tool displays the external links that have been added to this Library.

5 Click Add New External Link.

The Administration tool displays the External Links page:

If you want to display the link as an image rather than as text, enter the path to the location of the image you want to display.

Do one of these options:

If the image you want to display is located in the Information Portal images directory, enter the name of the image.
If the image you want to display is stored in a different location on the Web, enter the URL of the image.

Note: SirsiDynix recommends that you store any images or logos in the Information Portal “images” or “logos” folders, respectively. By default, these are located in this directory:

Mark this box if you want the link to be validated before displaying to the user.

If you choose to validate the link during searching, Information Portal will check the link to make sure that it points to a valid URL. If the URL is valid, Information Portal displays the link on the full bib page. If the link does not point to a valid URL, Information Portal does not display the link on the full bib page.

Note: If you choose to enable this option, Information Portal will validate the URL each time the user visits a full bib page, which may increase the time to display for the user.

7 Click OK.

The Administration tool adds the external link and then displays it in the list of links that have been added to this Library.

8 Repeat steps 5 through 7 for any additional commercial links that you want to add to this Information Portal Library.
9 Click Done.
10 Add the external link to a library profile. (For instructions, see Adding or Deleting an External Link for a Library Profile.)
