Using the HTML Anchor Tag

To configure Information Portal to display linkable tags in the format you want, you must first understand how the HTML anchor tag operates. The HTML anchor tag lets you create a hyperlinked image or text string to display in Information Portal for items using the Tag856 MARC map. (For example, you could create a hyperlink text string that displays in Information Portal and takes the user to the SirsiDynix web site. You can call the text string “Go to SirsiDynix site”.)

There are three parts to an anchor tag:

Opening tag. This first part of the HTML anchor tag assigns the URL for the web site to be accessed. You can substitute any valid URL between the quotation marks ( “ ).
Display text. This second part of the HTML anchor tag displays as hyperlinked text on a web page. This hyperlinked text is generally blue and underlined. When the user clicks on the hyperlinked text, the browser takes the users to the URL assigned in the opening tag. You can also insert graphics that display as hyperlinked images.
Closing tag. This final part of the HTML anchor tag closes the HTML anchor tag. This HTML anchor tag is the basic tag used for customizing linkable MARC tags for Information Portal.
