You can add an external link to an OpenURL target (or content provider). To create the link, you configure Information Portal to create the OpenURL and pass bibliographic information to a link resolver. In order to add a link to an OpenURL target, your library must be authorized to access that target (such as access to a link resolver).
When you add an OpenURL target, you need to know the syntax and format to use. This task assumes that you know the syntax required for the version of OpenURL that you are using (version 0.1 or version 1.0). The format you should use typically includes a link resolver URL and metadata elements drawn from bibliographic information (such as the journal title and ISSN).
In addition to standard OpenURL syntax, the Information Portal Administration tool requires you to enter parentheses around certain parameters in order for your link resolver to interpret the parameter correctly. When the link resolver interprets the syntax, it populates the URL with the actual data that will find the information the user is searching for.
For example, if you are using OpenURL version 0.1, use this syntax:
To add this to the URL |
Enter this syntax for version 0.1 |

Journal title |
(title)= |
title=JAMA |
ISSN |
(issn)= |
issn=1234-5678 |
For example, if you are using OpenURL version 1.0, use this syntax:
To add this to the URL |
Enter this syntax for version 1.0 |

To add an external link to an OpenURL target
1 | Open your Information Portal Administration tool web site. |
2 | Click the Setup tab. |
3 | Click the Libraries sub-tab. |
4 | Click the External Links option. |
The Administration tool displays the external links that have been added to this Library.
5 | Click Add New External Link. |
The Administration tool displays the External Links page:
6 | Complete these fields: |
Field |
Action |
||||||
Description |
Enter the description of the link. This description displays as the link’s label, or name. (For example, you may enter “Find Journal”.) |
||||||
Choose Open URL from the drop-down list. |
|||||||
Choose the type of window in which you want the link to open. You can choose Current Window or New Window from the drop-down list. Note: SirsiDynix recommends that you choose to open the link in a new window. |
|||||||
Enter the URL for the OpenURL link resolver to which you want to link, and the metadata fields for the type of information that you want this URL to find. You should receive the base URL from your link resolver provider. |
|||||||
If you want to display the link as an image rather than as text, enter the path to the location of the image you want to display. Do one of these options:
Note: SirsiDynix recommends that you store any images or logos in the Information Portal “images” or “logos” folders, respectively. By default, these are located in this directory: drive letter: directory where you install Application Server software/jboss/server/default/deploy/hipres.war |
|||||||
Mark this box if you want the link to be validated before displaying to the user. If you choose to validate the link during searching, Information Portal will check the link to make sure it points to a valid URL. If the URL is valid, Information Portal displays the link on the full bib page. If the link does not point to a valid URL, Information Portal does not display the link on the full bib page. Note: If you choose to enable this option, Information Portal will validate the URL each time the user visits a full bib page, which may increase the time to display for the user. |
7 | Click OK. |
The Administration tool adds the external link and then displays it in the list of links that have been added to this Library.
8 | Repeat steps 5 through 7 for any additional OpenURL links that you want to add to this Information Portal Library. |
9 | Click Done. |
10 | Add the external link to a library profile. (For instructions, see Adding or Deleting an External Link for a Library Profile.) |
11 | When you finish making changes in Information Portal, restart the Application Server process (JBoss). |
