Setting Up Transit Location Groups

You can further limit transit holds so items outside of your location's primary location group are not used to fill a request under specific conditions. If your library group has an item currently circulating that could fill the request, that item will fill the hold when it is checked in rather than transiting an item from outside the location group. This feature can be used when transit times or cost of transits between groups make it preferable to wait for a local item to fill the hold.

As an example of why you would want to use the item in circulation, a patron in Library A places a hold on an item that Library A owns but is currently checked out. Library B has a copy of the book on the shelf. Library B pulls the item from the shelf and places it in transit. Because of the distance, the Library B's item doesn't arrive at Library A until after 4 weeks. During that time, the item at Library A is checked in and fills the patron's hold. When the item from Library B arrives, it is then transited back to Library B because it is no longer needed. So the item at Library B is in transit for 8 weeks total while waiting for the item in circulation could fill the hold more quickly and with much less cost to the library. If you set up the location group correctly, Horizon will not transit the item from Library B.

You can enable this functionality by putting the location's primary location group in the Transit Location Group field of the location record (see step 4, below). To use this functionality you should be using the Pull List Priority in matham and have your Circ Parameter 29 (request privileges) configured using location group priority. The location group used in the Transit Location Group field should be the same location group you are using in the Request Privileges circ parameter. For more information about setting up Circ Parameter 29 configurations, see Working with Parameter 29 (Request Privileges).
