Adding an Element to a Search Result Display

You can add as many elements to a search result display as you want your Information Portal users to see (or as many as are available for the type of display). (An element is a field of information from a bib record that appears on a display, such as a title or an author. For example, you may have a summary display that has a title element and an author element.)

For a browse display, all of the possible elements for this display may already be on the display. This is because the browse display must always have the Data and Count elements; you specify the other elements you want when you first add the display. (These elements are See, See Also, and Title.) If you want to add these elements to a browse display after you have already added the display, then you must add a new display and delete the old one. (For instructions, see Changing a Search Result Display.)

To add an element to a search result display

1 Access the display that you want to change, or add a new one. (For instructions, see Adding or Accessing a Search Result Display.)
2 Click Add New Element.

The Administration tool displays the Add Data Element page:

3 Complete these fields to add an element to a display:

Field

Action

Display Order

If you do not want this element to display last in the list of elements on this display, enter the number for the order in which you want Information Portal to display this element.

(For example, enter “3”.)

By default, this field displays the number that makes this element display last in the list of elements.

Label

Enter the name you want Information Portal to display for this element on the search result page if there is no fixed element code.

(For example, enter “Title”.)

Here is an example of title and author elements with their label:

Title: The Tempest
Author: William Shakespeare

(For more information on the fixed element code, see “Fixed Element Code” in this table.)

Fixed Element Code

Note: The fixed element codes that appear are different depending on whether you are completing item or bib information.

If necessary, choose one of these fixed element codes:

Title. Choose this code if this element is the title element.
Call #. Choose this code if this element is the call number element.
Publisher. Choose this code if this element is the publisher element.
PubDate. Choose this code if this element is the publication date element.
Author. Choose this code if this element is the author element.
NetLibrary. Choose this code if this element is for the netLibrary eBook element.
856 Tag (URL). Choose this code if this element is the 856 tag URL element.
Status. Choose this code if this element is for the status element.
Subject. Choose this code if this element is a subject element.
Series. Choose this code if this element is the series element.
Hook to Holdings. Choose this code if this element is a holdings or item element.
Linked Bib. Choose this code if this element is for the 773 or 774 analytic linking tag.

A fixed element code changes the appearance of the text to set it off. (For example, all titles are bold.) Here is an example of title and author elements with their fixed element codes:

The Tempest
by William Shakespeare

If you do not specify a fixed element code, then Information Portal uses the Label you enter. (For more information, see “Label” in this table.)

Note: Do not use these fixed element codes on elements other than the ones described here.

Table Name

Enter the name of the Horizon table from which the element’s information comes.

(For more information, see the Horizon Table Structures e-Guide.)

Column Name

Enter the name of the Horizon column from which the element’s information comes.

(For more information, see the Horizon Table Structures e-Guide.)

Key Column Name

Enter the name of the Horizon column that you want displayed if the information in the column you just specified is unavailable.

(For more information, see the Horizon Table Structures e-Guide.)

MARC Map

Choose the MARC map that contains the information you want displayed.

Note: If you install Information Portal on a non-English database, you must assign a MARC map to each display element in order for results to display non-English data.

Element Type

If the data for this element is an image or HTML, do one of these options; otherwise, leave this field at Normal:

If the data is an image, choose Image.
If the data is formatted in HTML, choose HTML text.

Is Hidden

If you want this element to be hidden, mark this box.

(For example, you may want to keep the information in this element for future or staff use, but do not currently want users to view this element on this display.)

4 Click OK.

The Administration tool displays the Edit Display page again.

5 If you want to add more elements to this display, repeat steps 2 through 4; otherwise, click OK again.

The Administration tool displays the Displays page again.

6 Add this display to a result type, if it is not already added. (For more information, see Adding a Result Type.)
7 When you finish making changes in Information Portal, restart the Application Server process (JBoss).
