Adding or Changing a Search Category

You can organize searches into root search categories and sub-categories like the search categories in popular Internet search engines, such as Yahoo. (For example, you may want to create search categories for Arts, Literature, Computers, Math, Geography, and so forth.) A root search category is the main topic from which all other sub-categories or searches stem. Under this root category, you can create sub-categories or searches related to the root category. Eventually, each search category and sub-category ends in quick searches that your users can perform by simply clicking on the hyperlink.

Before You Begin

When you think about organizing your search categories and their searches, you may want to plan them out on paper before you add them in Information Portal. This makes it easier for you to keep track of the different levels and how they relate to each other.

To add or change a search category

1 Open your Information Portal Administration tool web site.
2 Click the Customize tab.
3 Click the Interface sub-tab.
4 Click the Search Categories option.

The Administration tool displays the Search Categories page.

5 Do one of these options:
If you want to add a search category, click Add a Root Category.
If you want to change a search category, find the search category you want, and click its name.

The Administration tool displays the Add or Edit Root Search Category page:

6 Complete or change these fields to add or change a root category:

Perform a Horizon Information Portal Search. Choose this URL type if you want Information Portal to perform an Information Portal search.
Open a Full URL. Choose this URL type if you want Information Portal to open a web page or web site outside of Information Portal.

Do one of these options:

If you chose to perform an Information Portal search, enter the portion of the URL after the session ID for the search that you want to perform.

To do this, open a new browser window. Access your Information Portal searching web site. Perform the search that you want Information Portal to perform when users click on this search hyperlink. In the URL or address field of your browser window, find the session ID number for your search session. (This session ID is a number that comes after the “session=” variable.) Copy everything after the session ID number, including the first ampersand ( & ). Paste that portion of the URL in this URL field.

If you chose to open a full URL, enter the URL for the web site that you want Information Portal to open.

Image Path

If you want Information Portal to place an image next to this search category or search, enter the path for the image.

You can use images for a kid’s PAC or to help users understand the categories and searches by providing pictures or other visual clues.

Number of Columns

Choose the number of columns that you want the sub-categories and searches split into on the Information Portal Category search page.

(For example, if you chose two columns, Information Portal would split your search categories evenly between the search categories and searches into two columns.)

7 Click OK.

The Administration tool displays the Search Categories page again.

8 If you chose to open sub-categories for the URL Type, complete the task Adding or Changing a Sub-Category.
9 When you finish making changes in Information Portal, restart the Application Server process (JBoss).
