Setting Up Fees for Renewals

You can set up a renewal processing fee for the Horizon Staff Client by using Circulation Parameter 54, “Renewal processing fee.” This parameter allows you to charge borrowers a renewal processing fee when they renew items they have checked out. The fee rate is controlled by a combination of item type, item location, borrower type, borrower location, and checkout location. You can also apply a discount or higher rate based on any combination of the above. Renewal processing fees can be turned on or off based on location.

The system will, by default, display a charge payment screen if you press the End Session button (or press alt+F12 or choose CKO, End Session from the menu) for a patron record that has a charge (for information about enabling the button for the Checkout window, see Enabling the End Session Button in Checkout).

To set up renewal processing fees

1 Open the Horizon client and log in.
2 Go to Administration > Table Editor.
3 Open the circ_parameter Mq view.
4 Locate and open the Renewal processing fee parameter (Parameter 54).
Specify the appropriate settings for the parameter. The default value is 0, and indicates that the library does not charge a fee for renewing an item. Specify a value greater than 0 to indicate the default fee in cents. For example, type 100 to specify a default hold request fee of $1.00.
Optionally, you can also create an exception by specifying Special Values based on Circulation Location, Borrower Location Group, Item Location Group, Borrower Type Group, and Item Type Group field values. To create an exception, click New, specify the Value in cents, and then specify the codes for one or more of the groups.

For example, if you wanted to charge an additional $1.00 (to the already $1.00 default rate) for multimedia renewals made by minors, you would specify the codes for the borrower type (minor) and item type (multimedia), and you would enter 200 (for $2.00) in the Value field.

For more information, see Setting Up or Editing a Circulation Parameter.

5 Click Close when you are done configuring the parameter.

Note: You must restart the Horizon Information Portal, the Horizon client, and the SIP or NCIP servers in order for changes in this parameter to take effect.
