If you want to easily find the URL for a custom hyperlink, then you can search in Information Portal. You may especially want to find the URL by searching if you want to also search other libraries, add limits, or sort the search results. You search in Information Portal the way that you want the custom hyperlink to search for an item.
All custom hyperlinks must have at least one variable. If the only variable is the term variable, then Information Portal uses the index specified for the search on the Welcome sub-tab.
If you do not want to search in Information Portal to find the custom hyperlink you need, you can create it from scratch. (For more information, see Creating a Custom Hyperlink from Scratch.)
Before You Begin
If you have not already done so, you may want to read the section about the different parts of the custom hyperlink’s URL. You must understand the parts of the URL so you can remove those parts that are unnecessary for your custom URL. (For more information, see Parts of the Information Portal Searching URL.)
To create a custom hyperlink by searching in Information Portal
1 | Open your Information Portal searching web site. |
(For example, enter “http://your Application Server IP address or domain name/ipac20/ipac.jsp” in your web browser’s URL entry field.)
2 | Perform your search, applying all of your limits, sorting requirements, and so forth. |
Note: Be sure you click the tab or sub-tab in Information Portal that you want your URL to display.
When Information Portal displays your search results, the URL in your browser’s URL entry field contains the information to execute the search and display the exact same search results in Information Portal.
3 | Refine your search until Information Portal displays the exact search results that you want users to see in Information Portal when they click on the custom hyperlink. |
4 | Copy the URL in your browser’s URL entry field, and paste it into a text editor (such as Notepad). |
For example, your URL might look similar to this:
http://205.10.10.10:8080/ipac20/ipac.jsp?session=20516322361002060813500
&menu=search&aspect=power&index=TW&term=air&oper=or
&aspect=power&index=TW&term=water&oper=and&index=TW
&term=pollution&oper=and&index=AUTHW&term=&source=206.10.10.10@%21curly&limit=PD+%3E+%3F1990%3F&ultype=&uloper=%3D&ullimit=
&sort=11023&x=12&y=9
5 | Delete the session variable and its value, and change any other parts of the URL as necessary. |
For example, you may want to delete the search term [keeping the “term” variable] if you want to allow a “hook-to-holdings” to your database for your third-party indexing or abstracting subscription service.) (For more information on hook-to-holdings, see Hook-to-Holdings for Third-Party Services Scenario.
6 | On your web page, enter or paste the URL in the HREF tag or other linking tag that you want, or give this URL to your external source. |
7 | Test accessing Information Portal using the URL on the web page. |
When a user clicks on the custom hyperlink, the search results that Information Portal displayed for you should be what Information Portal displays for the user.
8 | Change and test the URL again, if necessary. |
