Adding or Accessing a Search Result Display

If you want to change how different search results display in Information Portal searching, then you can add a new search result display. You can also access an existing search result display and change it. When you add a search result display or access a new one so that you can change it, you must specify information about the elements that you want displayed. (An element is a field of information from a bib record that appears on a search result display, such as a title or an author. For example, you may have a summary display that has a title element and author an element.)

Also, if you want to use the same browse display for several different types of searches, then you could add a new browse display by copying the browse display you want, then add the new browse display to a search result type. (For more information on result types, see Customizing a Result Type.)

To add or access a search result display

1 Open your Information Portal Administration tool web site.
2 Click the Customize tab.
3 Click the Searching sub-tab.
4 Click the Displays option.

The Administration tool displays the Displays page.

5 Do one of these options:

To add a new display from scratch

1 Click Add Display.

The Administration tool displays the Add Display page.

2 Complete these fields to add a display:
Description. Enter a description for the new display. (For example, enter “Author Browse”.)
Display Type. Choose the type of display that you want for the new display. (For example, choose “Browse List”.)
Add “See” and “See Also” Elements. If you chose “Browse List” for the display type and you want this display to show the see and see also references available for a topic in the browse list display, mark this box.
Add “Title” Element. If you chose “Browse List” for the display type and you want this display to be used for call number browse searching, mark this box.
3 Click OK.

The Administration tool displays a summary page of the settings for the new display.

4 Review the settings and click OK.

If the fields you just completed for the display are not correct, you can change them. (For instructions, see Changing a Search Result Display.)

The Administration tool displays the Edit Display page. If this is a browse display, this page shows the default elements for the display.

5 Continue with step 6.

To add a new display by copying an existing one

1 Find the display that you want to copy.
2 Click Copy next to the display.
3 In the Description field, replace the old description with a new description. (For example, enter “Author Browse 2”.)
4 Click OK.

The Administration tool displays a summary page of the settings for the new display.

5 Review the settings and click OK.

If the fields you just completed for the display are not correct, you can change them. (For instructions, see Changing a Search Result Display.)

The Administration tool displays the Edit Display page, showing the same elements from the display that you copied.

6 Continue with step 6.

To access an existing display

1 Click the name of the display that you want to access.

(For example, click “Author Browse”.)

The Administration tool displays the Edit Display page, showing the current elements for this display.

You can now change the elements in the display, but you cannot change the description of the display, the type of display, or other information about the display itself. To do this, you must add a new display with the changed information and then delete the old one. (For instructions, see Changing a Search Result Display.)

Here is an example of the Edit Display page:

6 Review the settings on the Edit Display page.
7 If you want to change any settings, continue with Working with Elements in a Z39.50 Search Result Display.
8 Add this display to a result type, if it is not already added. (For more information, see Adding a Result Type.)
9 When you finish making changes in Information Portal, restart the Application Server process (JBoss).
