Changing Global Settings

You can change the settings that have an impact on Information Portal throughout the interface. These settings control whether or not your browser pages are refreshed when you use the browser’s Back button, and how much time Information Portal will wait for a response before timing out and returning to the library’s home page. You can also set the default profile (searching environment). (This is the profile that Information Portal uses if it can not find another one.)

If you want to change Global Settings in the Administration tool, you must set up your web browser Internet options so that it can check for newer versions of stored pages.

To change global settings

1 Open your Information Portal Administration tool web site.
2 Click the Setup tab.
3 Click the Other sub-tab.
4 Click the Global Settings option.

The Administration tool displays the Global Settings page:

5 Click Edit Settings.

The Administration tool displays the Edit Settings page:

6 Update these settings, as necessary:

For this setting

Do this

Browser Cache

If you want to see your changes when you click the Back button, you can set this to False. Information Portal reloads a new page and updates it. This may slow down Information Portal’s overall response time because of the additional work the server is doing.

The default setting is True. This lets Information Portal save the pages that you or the users have already accessed in the browser. Setting this to True speeds up response times; however, it will not show your most recent changes to a page that was saved before you made changes.

Search Timeout

Enter the number of seconds that you want Information Portal to wait for a response from the Horizon server before a user’s search times out and returns to the library home page.

(For example, enter “120” if you want Information Portal to wait two minutes before the search times out.)

Session Timeout

Enter the number of seconds that you want Information Portal to wait before closing a session and returning to the library home page.

(For example, “300” equals five minutes before a user’s session closes.)

If a user walks away from a workstation, you can set this to time out quickly to prevent unauthorized access.

Default Profile

Choose the profile that you want to be displayed if no profile parameter is added to the URL.

(For more information on changing profiles within the URL, see Making a Profile Available to Users or Staff.)

7 Click OK.

The Administration tool returns to the Global Settings page.

8 When you finish making changes in Information Portal, restart the Application Server process (JBoss).
