Setting Up a Global Maximum Number of Checkouts

Horizon lets your library set a global maximum number of items that can be checked out to borrowers for all locations. If a borrower checks out an item that causes him to exceed the specified maximum number of items, Horizon displays the Maximum Exceeded window and allows the staff user to accept the block or enter an override to allow the checkout.

This configuration is set independent of the Max. Number of Items Out circulation parameter code that is set at the Location level. If a checkout is blocked because of the global maximum, the value global displays next to the btype in the Maximum Exceeded window; if a checkout is blocked because of a Max. Number of Items Out value, the value biblio displays.

To set up a global maximum number of checkouts

1 Set up Global maximum of checkouts (circulation parameter 44).

For general instructions, see Setting Up or Editing a Circulation Parameter. Then use the remaining steps of this task to customize the parameter.

2 In the Value field, enter the maximum number of checkouts that Horizon will allow for each borrower.
3 If you want to create or edit any exceptions, do these steps in the Special Values group:
a Choose the exception that you want to change, or create a new exception.
b Enter or choose a code in one or more of the borrower type fields.
c In the Value field, enter the maximum number of checkouts for the maximum number of checkouts exception you want to apply.

Note: The exception value set here overrides the default value for this parameter.
