Setting Up Phrase, Adjacency, and Proximity Search Options

If you want to, you can let users choose search options on the Power Search page, which further help users get the search results they want. You do this by setting up phrase, adjacency, and proximity search options for a profile.

Here is an example of a Power Search page with two different search options defined:

To help you decide how you want to set up these different types of search options, here are the definitions and examples of each option.

Phrase search option. This limits Information Portal to finding and displaying search results that exactly match the search terms users enter.

For example, if users choose this search option and enter “tax property” for their search terms, then Information Portal returns only search results that include the phrase “tax property” exactly as they entered it.

Adjacency search option. This lets Information Portal find and display search results for search terms that match within one word of each other. In other words, the search terms are next to each other, but in any order.

For example, if users choose this search option and enter “tax property” for their search terms, then Information Portal returns search results that include the phrases “tax property” or “property tax.”

Proximity search option. This lets Information Portal find and display search results for search terms that match within the number of words that you specify (such as two, three, or five), in any order.

For example, if users choose this search option, which is set up for a proximity of three search terms, and users enter “tax property” for their search terms, then Information Portal returns search results that may contain these terms: “tax property,” “property tax,” “tax on property,” “tax on private property,” “tax on commercial property,” “property and tax,” “property and your tax bracket,” and so forth.

If you want to, you can also change or delete a search option at any time.
