Restarting the Application Server Process (JBoss)

The Application Server process (also called JBoss) controls the Information Portal database. The Application Server process must continually run on the Application Server machine to make Information Portal available to users.

Whenever you make changes to Information Portal with the Administration tool (or if you make changes to any Add-On products), you need to restart JBoss to restart the Information Portal database. When the database restarts, Information Portal uses the new settings that you have made.

When you restart the Application Server process, both the Administration tool and Information Portal searching functions are unavailable until the restart is complete. Because of this, you may want to make changes in the Administration tool during off-peak hours.

To restart the Application Server process (JBoss)

1 Make sure that you have made all the changes in the Administration tools that you want to make for the current session.
2 Have all staff and administration users close their Information Portal connections by closing (not minimizing or refreshing) all open browsers.

This assures that your library staff and administration can see the changes you just made in Information Portal when they reopen their browsers.

Note: Since restarting the database disconnects all users, any users logged in to Information Portal when you restart JBoss lose their Information Portal connection. You can warn users that the system will be shutting down, or they may see a server message telling them that there is a problem. They can reconnect when the database finishes restarting.

3 If you have not already done so, open your Information Portal Administration tool web site.
4 Click Restart JBoss at the bottom of the main Setup or main Customize page.

The Information Portal database is shut down and restarted.

Note: It may take the database up to five minutes to make the changes and restart. Please be patient.

5 Close your browser.
6 Re-open your Information Portal Administration tool web site to verify that your changes have been made.
