You can choose the way a user is authenticated, or verified, in Information Portal when this profile is used. (For example, if you want users at one location to enter a barcode to verify who they are and their privileges within Information Portal, but enter both a barcode and a PIN at another location, you can change the authentication settings in the profiles representing these locations.) These fields were imported into Information Portal from the Horizon PAC flavor during installation.
You can also enable LDAP authentication to be used in addition or instead of this standard authentication. (For more information, see Setting Up LDAP Authentication for a Profile.)
Your borrower authentication information must be unique for each user. (For example, you cannot use name and birth date, because more than one user can have the same information.)
To choose borrower authentication for a profile
1 | Access the profile you want to change, or add a new one. |
2 | Click Profile Information. |
The Administration tool displays the Profile Information page.

Field |
Action |
Borrower Authentication Field 1 |
Choose the type of authentication that you want to have the user enter when they use Information Portal. (For example, choose “Barcode”.) Important: If you use this field by itself, make sure you choose a string or number unique to each user. (For example, you could choose “Barcode” but not “Comments”.) If you use the optional Borrower Authentication |
Borrower Authentication Label 1 |
Enter the text describing what the user needs to do. This text is displayed above the dialog box where the user enters the information. (For example, enter “Type in your Library Barcode and press Enter.”) |
Mask |
Mark this box if you want to have asterisks (*) displayed as the user types in the authentication information. This prevents others from seeing the information that is entered. |
Borrower Authentication Field 2 (optional) |
Choose the second type of authentication that you want to have the user enter when they use Information Portal. (For example, choose “Pin#”.) Important: If you use this field in addition to Borrower Authentication Field 1, make sure the combination of the two fields is unique for each user. (For example, you could choose “Pin#” here in addition to “Name” in Borrower Authentication Field 1 to make sure that two users with the same name are identified individually by a unique combination.) Note: If you want your users to enter only one piece of information to verify their identity, such as a barcode number, choose None here. |
Borrower Authentication Label 2 (optional) |
Enter the text describing what the user needs to do. This text is displayed above the dialog box where the user enters the information. (For example, enter “Type in your PIN and press Enter.”) |
Mask |
Mark this box if you want to have asterisks (*) displayed as the user types in the authentication information. This prevents others from seeing the information that is entered. |
5 | Click OK. |
The Administration tool returns to the Edit Profile page.
6 | When you finish making changes in Information Portal, restart the Application Server process (JBoss). |
