Adding or Accessing a Z39.50 Search Result Display

You add a display for a Z39.50 library in almost the same way that you add or change a display for your local libraries. You can also access an existing Z39.50 search result display to change the elements in the display. Also, the same rule on browse displays applies: you must use a unique browse display for each result type. (For more information, see Adding or Accessing a Search Result Display.)

Item and Copy displays contain elements with additional fields for displaying the item and copy information properly from the Z39.50 library database. Be sure you access these displays, make sure they have the information you want, then assign them to the proper result type.

To add or access a Z39.50 search result display

1 Open your Information Portal Administration tool web site.
2 Click the Customize tab.
3 Click the Z39.50 sub-tab.
4 Click the Displays option.

The Administration tool displays the Displays page.

This page and the rest of the Administration pages used for displays tasks look and function exactly the same as the displays pages for your local libraries.

5 Do one of these options:

Do this

To add a new display from scratch

1 Click Add Display.

The Administration tool displays the Add Display page.

2 Complete these fields to add a display:
Description. Enter a description for the new display. (For example, enter “Author Browse”.)
Display Type. Choose the type of display that you want for the new display. (For example, choose “Browse List”.)
Add “See” and “See Also” Elements. If you chose “Browse List” for the display type and you want this display to show the see and see also references available for a topic in the browse list display, mark this box.

Note: You can use or view the see and see also elements only for Z39.50 libraries that use Horizon or Information Portal.

3 Click OK.

The Administration tool displays a summary page of the settings for the new display.

4 Review the settings, and click OK.

If the fields you just completed for the display are not correct, you can change them. (For instructions, see Changing a Z39.50 Search Result Display.)

The Administration tool displays the Edit Display page. If this is a browse display, this page shows the default elements for the display.

5 Continue with step 6.

To add a new display by copying an existing one

1 Find the display that you want to copy.
2 Click Copy next to the display.
3 In the Description field, replace the old description with a new description. (For example, enter “Author Browse 2”.)
4 Click OK.

The Administration tool displays a summary page of the settings for the new display.

5 Review the settings and click OK.

If the fields you just completed for the display are not correct, you can change them. (For instructions, see Changing a Z39.50 Search Result Display.)

The Administration tool displays the Edit Display page, showing the same elements from the display that you copied.

6 Continue with step 6.

To access an existing display

Click the name of the display that you want to access.

(For example, click “Author Browse”.)

The Administration tool displays the Edit Display page, showing the current elements for this display.

You can now change the elements in the display, but you cannot change the description of the display, the type of display, or other information about the display itself. To do this, you must add a new display with the changed information and then delete the old one. (For instructions, see Changing a Z39.50 Search Result Display.)

Here is an example of the Edit Display page:

6 If you want to change any elements on the display or add new ones, continue with the task Working with Elements in a Z39.50 Search Result Display.
7 Add this display to a result type, if it is not already added. (For more information, see Adding a Z39.50 Result Type.)
8 When you finish making changes in Information Portal, restart the Application Server process (JBoss).
