Specify which notices the borrower wants to opt in for. You should not make assumptions about what the borrower wants. Regardless of what is selected here, the borrower only gets text messages if the Type has been enabled for the system and not disabled for the location.
Options to select: SMS Notice PreOverdues, Overdues, Holds, General
Path: Table Editor > borrower_dms > Edit
Path: Checkout (or Checkin) > Borrower > Edit Borrower
The Edit: Borrowers table allows you to specify lots of different information about the borrower. For the SMS messaging feature, the only part that you need to look at is the Phone area.
New
Allows you to create a new phone record for the borrower.
Delete
Allows you to delete the selected phone record from the borrower's record.
Phone list
The phone list displays all the defined phones that have been created for the borrower.
The number of phones displays beside the list.
Phone
Specifies the phone number to which SMS notification messages will be sent.
This is required for SMS messaging to work.
You should enter a valid phone number. The SMS server will not accept any phone number greater than 14 characters. This number should not include the plus sign (+) or a country dialing code.
Spaces, hyphens, parentheses, and any other non-numerical digit is removed by the processor, so they are allowed when the number is written.
Type
Specifies the phone type.
This field is required.
Type the code for the Type or click Codes to work with and select from the list of existing Phone Types.
The selected type must be enabled for SMS for the feature to work. For more information, see Enabling SMS for a phone type.
Country Code
Specifies the region or country code to use for the user. The dialing code associated with the selected country code will be automatically prepended to the borrower’s phone number by the SMS server when the SMS message gets sent.
If a default has been defined, that value is selected by default .
Otherwise, type the code or click Codes to work with and select from the list of existing Country Codes. For more information about the fields, see Fields: Edit Country Code.
If no value is specified here, the system uses the default value stored, in the following order of precedence: sms_control_exception, sms_control, and then “US”. This value will not appear in the borrower field, but will be resolved each time an SMS message is sent to the number.
Click Codes to work with and select from the list of existing Country Codes. For details, see Specifying country codes.
This field must be only 2 alphabetic characters in length.
SMS Notice
Select one or more of the checkboxes in this section. The borrower will receive SMS messages only for the selected options.
Note: The system or location may not have enabled the use of all the SMS notice types. Therefore, even though a borrower may request to receive notices of that type it does not mean that the system will actually be able to do so.

Description |
PreOverdues |
Specifies whether to have the system send out SMS messages when the borrower has items that are due soon. For more information about when these notices are sent, see “Enabling Borrowers to Receive Pre-overdue Notices” in the Circulation Setup Guide. Day End processing determines whether to create an SMS message for the borrower. |
Overdues |
Specifies whether to have the system send out SMS messages when the borrower has overdue items. Day End processing determines whether to create an SMS message for the borrower. |
Holds |
Specifies whether to have the system send out SMS messages to inform the borrower of holds available for pickup. Day End processing determines whether to create an SMS message for the borrower. |
General |
Specifies whether to have the system send out SMS messages that are general notices to the borrower. These notices are sent individually to each user - they are not part of the Day End processing. These would typically be individual messages that the library would like to communicate to a specific borrower (perhaps to test whether the borrower can receive the SMS message or to text a call number to the borrower). |
