Working with Elements in a Search Result Display

When you change an existing search result display or add a new one, you must be sure the display contains the information that you want. Each piece of information you specify in a search result display is called an “element.” (For example, the title, author, publisher, and so forth are separate elements in a full bib display.)

You can change the name or label, the field, or the dictionary of an existing element on a display and the order in which the displays appear; you cannot change anything else for an existing element. However, you can change an old element by adding a new element with the changed information, then deleting the old element.

Before You Begin

Before you make any changes to elements in a display, you may want to copy the display you want to change. This way, you have a backup copy in case you need to start over. (For instructions on copying a display, see Adding or Accessing a Search Result Display.)
