Information Portal lets you add and configure external links that display for any library item. External links are links that point to a commercial web site or OpenURL source. External links are helpful because they provide additional resources to the user. You can add, update, and delete external links from an Information Portal Library.
Information Portal lets you add and configure three different types of external links: commercial links or OpenURL links. You can add more than one type of external link to any Information Portal Library. After you add an external link to an Information Portal Library, you must assign the link to one or more library profiles.
If you want to add an external link to an RPA site, you can assign an RPA link to only one library profile.
You can define the name and type of external link that you want to add, and the URL to which you want the external link to point. If you are adding a commercial or OpenURL link, you can choose to display an external link as an image or as text, or can choose to have the URL validated before the web site is displayed to the user.
After you have added external links to a Library, Information Portal lets you add, update, and delete external links from a specific library profile. If you add more than one external link to a specific library profile, you can change the order in which external links appear on the full bib page. After you add an external link to a library profile, you can change the label of the external link if necessary.
Information Portal lets you add and manage external links to commercial web sites such as online bookstores. You can add one or more commercial links to the particular Library, and then assign those links to one or more library profiles. By default, Information Portal includes commercial links to both Amazon and Barnes & Noble online bookstores for each Information Portal Library. Commercial links to these bookstores let users view bibliographic information and purchase information for a specific library item. (For example, when a user clicks a commercial link to Amazon from the full bib page for a library item, Information Portal redirects them to the bib record of the library item in Amazon’s online bookstore.)
For HIP 3.20, you need to manually update the Amazon and Barnes and Noble links so that they will work.
For Amazon, use the following form:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?keywords=(ISBN)&index=books &linkCode=qs&tag=ASSOCIATE_ID_TO_EARN_MONEY
(Replace ASSOCIATE_ID_TO_EARN_MONEY with the library’s associate ID for Amazon).
For Barnes and Noble, use the following form:
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/bookSearch/isbnInquiry.asp?isbn=(ISBN)
For information on how to change the links, see Updating an External Link for a Library.
You can modify these default commercial links as necessary or set up new commercial links that point to specific web sites. After you add commercial links to an Information Portal Library, you determine whether or not they are displayed by assigning them to a specific library profile.
Information Portal is compatible with version 0.1 and version 1.0 of OpenURL. This guide assumes that you are familiar with the syntax required to configure the version of OpenURL that you are using. (For more information on OpenURL, see the OpenURL white paper on the SirsiDynix web site at “www.SirsiDynix.com”.)
Information Portal supports the use of OpenURL links. OpenURL is a standardized framework for packaging and transmitting context-sensitive data over a network.
OpenURL links are used to link online bibliographic citations for resources to related web services (such as full text databases, web search engines, or library catalogs). OpenURL links send metadata or unique identifiers for a particular resource, along with contextual information, to a link resolver. A link resolver is a software application that matches the data contained in OpenURL links to appropriate context-sensitive web services to which your library has access.
OpenURL depends on both a source and a target in order to display digital information correctly. A source is the entity that generates the OpenURL link. A target is the place to which the OpenURL content is sent. Information Portal can be used as both an OpenURL source and an OpenURL link resolver target. As the OpenURL source, Information Portal can create an OpenURL link used to access services (or targets) that index the title or full text of specific articles in a journal. As the OpenURL target, Information Portal can be a target for OpenURL link resolvers where the patron wants to access a hard copy of the journal.
OpenURL link resolvers enable library users’ automated access to full-text articles. OpenURL links let users get context-specific, digitized information for a book or article from an OpenURL target. (For example, when a user clicks an OpenURL link on the full bib page to display the full text of a library item, Information Portal uses a link resolver to display any electronic databases or collections that the library has access to that contain the full text of the library item in electronic form. The user can then access the database or refine their search criteria to search for a specific issue or volume number.)
You must have Horizon Link Resolver or another compatible link resolver implemented in order for OpenURL links in Horizon Information Portal to work properly. For information on purchasing Horizon Link Resolver, contact your SirsiDynix Sales Representative.
